Frequently Asked Questions
We know many families are new to the sport, and that’s great — lacrosse is fun to learn! Here are answers to common questions from parents of K–8th grade boys and girls.
1. What kind of equipment does my child need?
For most players, the basic equipment includes:
-
Lacrosse stick (girls’ or boys’ stick depending on league rules)
-
Helmet (for boys; girls may use protective goggles depending on rules)
-
Mouthguard (required for all players)
-
Shoulder pads and arm pads (primarily for boys’ field lacrosse)
-
Gloves
-
Cleats (lacrosse or soccer cleats are generally acceptable)
-
Goggles and sometimes optional headgear for girls, depending on age and league standards
Specific requirements can vary slightly by age group and league rules. After you register, we’ll provide a detailed equipment list and recommendations on where to purchase or size gear.
2. When and where are practices and games?
Practices:
-
Practice schedules will be available in early January.
-
Practices are generally held on weeknights at fields in the Buford area.
-
Younger players typically have fewer practices per week, while older players may practice more frequently.
Games:
-
Game schedules are typically released early to mid-February.
-
Most games are held on weekends, with occasional weeknight games depending on the league and field availability.
-
Games may include both home games in Buford and away games against nearby programs.
Once schedules are finalized, your child’s coach will share specific days, times, and locations.
3. How will we receive schedules?
You’ll receive practice and game schedules through multiple channels to make it easy to stay informed:
-
Email: We’ll send schedules and updates to the email address you use at registration.
-
Team Communication: Your coach or team manager may use group messages for reminders, updates, and any last-minute changes.
-
Website Updates: Important schedule changes or announcements may also be posted on the league website.
If you’re not receiving communications, please let your coach know or email us so we can help get you connected.
4. Is lacrosse safe for beginners?
Like all sports, lacrosse involves physical activity and contact, but player safety is a top priority. We:
-
Follow age-appropriate rules designed for safety
-
Require proper protective equipment
-
Teach correct techniques for checking, defending, and body positioning
-
Emphasize sportsmanship and respect, not reckless play
Our goal is to help your child build confidence, learn the game the right way, and enjoy a safe, positive experience.
5. My child has never played before. Is that okay?
Absolutely! We welcome new players at every age level. Many of our athletes start with little or no experience. Our coaches focus on:
-
Teaching basic skills step-by-step
-
Explaining rules in a simple, easy-to-understand way
-
Building confidence through repetition and positive feedback
Your child does not need to know the rules or have played before — the spring season is a great time to start.
6. How competitive is Buford Lacrosse?
We value competitiveness through hard work, but we always balance that with fun, learning, and character development. Our teams:
-
Compete to win games and tournaments
-
Emphasize effort, improvement, and teamwork
-
Teach players how to handle both victory and defeat with class
We want kids to grow as athletes and as people, learning the importance of discipline, resilience, and respect.
